The child/counsellor relationship is the key to influencing the effectiveness of therapy and therefore the aim is to facilitate a safe, exclusive, authentic, confidential (subject to limits) and purposeful relationship with clients. Once a trusting relationship is built children then begin to express and explore their feelings and deal with their presenting issues.
In order to engage with younger children and help them talk freely about painful issues, non-directive play therapy may be used. Using various forms of art, puppets and soft toys, story-telling, imaginative role-play and books children can tell their story and deal with their thoughts and feelings in a non-threatening way.
