I undertook my initial counselling training in 1994, and later followed this with a practitioner qualification, which I gained in 2001. In terms of relevant counselling experience, knowledge and skills, I have worked in a number of different community, voluntary and statutory counselling settings. I have a substantial level of experience working with clients presenting from a variety of different backgrounds and across a broad spectrum of presenting issue.

My approach to counselling is based on the relational model. This model offers a view of the person and of the counselling process that integrates the existential humanistic (mainly the person-centred approach) and psychodynamic (mainly object relations and interpersonal theory) traditions of counselling. These are all approaches that highlight relations as the central concept in the theory and practice of counselling. Working from the relational model, then, I see the relationship between the counsellor and client as the main tool in effecting therapeutic change, and for this reason, we will spend the first few sessions establishing a good working relationship to support the work of the counseling ahead.
