Counselling & Psychotherapy

In recent years, counselling and psychotherapy have become accepted as professions that can help people who are facing emotional and mental difficulties. Indeed research shows that it can be more effective as a way of improving a person’s mental state than medication. The Orchard counselling and psychotherapy is always with professionals who are well qualified and very experienced.

Most therapists are accredited by or registered with the two main counselling organisations, BACP and UKCPTherapists offer a safe environment to talk about the problems that face you. You are helped to understand yourself better, to express emotions and to sometimes make changes. Therapists do not give advice, they help you find out what is right for you.

So often we have so many people telling us who we are and what we should do that we lose touch with our own needs and self-image. Friends and relatives can also be supportive in times of need but they can never be objective in their discussions with you and there may also be some issues that would be inappropriate to share.

Therapists work in different ways using different frameworks. For example, if you want to explore your past and think about what happened in your family and how that affects you now, you might choose a psychodynamic counsellor. If you want to work out the “here and now” you might choose a person centred counsellor.

A counsellor offering an “integrated” approach might present the individual with a variety of techniques as to how they want to address their problem. Some therapists have specialist skills relating to, for example, eating disorders, relationship problems, addiction and phobias. When you read the therapist profiles you will be able to find someone to suit your needs and if you need some help, email or phone The Orchard.

Counselling and psychotherapy sessions last between 50 minutes and an hour.If you want to apply for a session, fill in the confidential referral form. This will be passed to your chosen therapist. If you are unsure about who to choose, the practice manager will match your needs (problems and time availability) with a therapist.

There is also some limited space available with student counsellors at a discounted fee.
