Speech & Language Therapy for Adults

The ability to communicate is central to all that we do – to who we are, how we relate to each other and to how we function in the world. In the UK, approx 2.5 million people have a communication disorder.

Speech and Language Therapists are specialists in speech, language, communication, voice and swallowing difficulties. We assess and diagnose communication disorders, treat the person with the disorder and work with those around them in order to improve communication.

What is communication?

  • Speech
  • Understanding speech
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Voice
  • Facial expression
  • Gesture
  • Body language
  • Drawing

Speech and Language Therapy for adults may be needed after a stroke or when someone has a neurological condition. Speech and Language Therapy treatment has been shown to improve problems in such areas as word finding, writing skills, voice production and overall speech intelligibility. It also helps people develop strategies to compensate for impaired skills. Communication involves at least two people, so therapy involves working with both the client and their family/friends/carers in order to maximise the success of communication in everyday life.

Speech and Language Therapists can also help people with the swallowing difficulties they may have after a stroke or because of a neurological condition. We can assess your swallow and help you manage your problems with eating and drinking by advising you on such things as food and/or drink consistencies, posture, and oral hygiene. A written referral from your doctor is needed for a swallowing assessment, and this is generally easy to arrange.

Your initial consultation will be up to 1 hour in length and includes taking your case history, exploring how your communication difficulties affect your daily life, and making a preliminary diagnosis following initial observations and assessment. Subsequent treatment sessions aim to treat your communication problems and/or help you manage them in everyday life.
