Group Therapy

What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy comprises ongoing 90 minute weekly meetings for a maximum 8 group members to work on a wide range of challenges that they wish to understand and resolve, in a safe and confidential context. The Conductor administers the group and facilitates the group process. Important learning from groupwork is gained through both direct interaction and through observing and listening to others.

What is the fee for Group Therapy?

The cost for group membership is £20 per meeting (as at September 2013). Please note that this is a membership fee, not an attendance fee.

How does Group Therapy work?

The main focus is on interactions between group members. As issues are explored, each member will have a response of value to contribute. As the group develops, long-established ways of relating emerge, presenting opportunities to understand their meaning, and experiment with different ways of relating that can lead to more satisfactory and enduring outcomes for all.

The task of members is to share personal challenges and experiences. Often, direct advice is desired from others. In groupwork, you will be encouraged instead to explore your thoughts, feelings and choices with others. Members are encouraged to both talk to and listen to each other, and respond as thoughtfully and honestly as they can.

As you share present or past experiences, including: dreams, thoughts, feelings, actions or inactions, preoccupations or concerns, you will discover new possibilities. It is helpful to talk about your experience of being part of the group. Whatever is talked about will contribute both to your and the groups’ understanding, which will be beneficial in managing life events.

Over time significant feelings often emerge that previously have felt to be either unbearable or unacceptable. Disappointment and frustration may be experienced at times. This is a normal part of the process, and it is helpful to voice these. The more you share, the more you and others are likely to gain. It can be particularly helpful to voice your doubts about group therapy within the group. At times when you feel least inclined to attend and/or share are often the times when it can be most helpful to do so, however frustrating and difficult this may seem.

Anxiety is a common experience at the start of a group. Trust of each other and the group can take time to build. The Conductor will help members to interact, and respond to and understand their experience. The Conductor will invite a deepening and extension of the range of expression by the group where helpful.

How long does Group Therapy last?

You are invited to think of a commitment in the order of 12 months in order to gain valuable learning from the experience. Learning can help members in the different roles they have in life i.e. work and domestic. This is a ‘slow open’ group. This means that over time, the membership changes as people leave (once they get enough of what they come for), and others join.
