Tui Na (Chinese Massage)

Tui Na (Chinese Massage)

Tui Na (pronounced ‘twee-nah’ and interpreted as ‘push-pull’) massage is a complete healing system used extensively in China to treat internal conditions as well as musculoskeletal issues (such as superficial trauma and injury).

Tui Na uses techniques found in massage therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation therapy, and sports rehabilitation therapy. If you were to merge all of these therapies together, you would come up with something that is very similar to Tui Na.

Tui Na is suitable for people of all ages, including children. Apart from treating conditions, it is also an excellent means of keeping oneself in an optimal health condition, both physically and mentally, as well as strengthening the body’s immune system.

How is it done?

Tui Na is typically applied with a patient sat on a chair or lying on a massage couch. Tui Na encompasses a variety of methods from light pressure to deep-tissue work which can be used to treat both acute and chronic conditions.

It is a hands-on-body manipulation treatment and Tui Na practitioners may employ a variety of methods to achieve their goals of:

  • Reducing pain and stiffness;
  • Increasing range of motion;
  • Removing blockages along the acupuncture meridians to stimulate the body and improve the flow of blood to promote healing from within.

Commonly used techniques include soft tissue massage, acupressure and soft tissue manipulation. Sometimes herbal compresses, liniments, ointments and heat are used to enhance these techniques.

What does it feel like?

The best part of the therapy is that it relaxes as well as energizes the person. The main benefit of Tui Na massage is that it focuses on the specific problem, whether it is an acute or a chronic pain associated with the joints, muscles or a skeletal system. Some patients experience a relaxed sleepiness whilst others feel supercharged.

Almost always, everyone feels better after Tui Na.
